Title
Cheilodactylus variegatus Valenciennes, 1833 “Pintadilla” como bioindicador de la contaminación por mercurio en la zona costera de Chorrillos - Ancón, Lima, Perú
Abstract
Mercury is a heavy metal with the ability to accumulate in marine organisms, being highly toxic, especially in its organic form. The “Pintadilla” (Cheilodactylus variegatus Valenciennes, 1833) lives in areas near the coast, our study area being the section between Chorrillos and Ancon, which is affected by anthropogenic discharges that occur along the coast. In this research work, the accumulation of mercury in the marine species “Pintadilla” was evaluated. Samples were collected from the Artisanal Fishing Markets of Chorrillos and Ancon in four different samplings, during the time interval from September 2018 to march 2019, taking 4 samples of the marine species per sampling. The muscle and liver tissue was separated from each species, and the total mercury concentration was determined using the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometer. Total mercury was also evaluated in samples of seawater and sediment (sea sand) at various points in the study area. The highest concentrations of total mercury were recorded in the samples from the Chorrillos sampling point, with average values of 0.1296 mg/kg in muscle tissue and 0.1459 mg/kg in liver tissue, while, at the point of Ancon sampling, an average value of 0.0587 mg/kg was reported for muscle tissue and 0.1028 mg/kg (wet basis) for liver tissue. Although these results did not exceed the maximum limits allowed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - World Health Organization (WHO), established at 0.5 mg/Kg, a medium positive correlation was observed between muscle and liver tissues at both sampling points. The low levels of mercury found in seawater and sediment (sea sand) were observed, which contrasts with the levels of mercury found in the “Pintadilla”, inferring the bioaccumulator capacity of this carcinophagous species.
