Title
Óleos essenciais de macroalgas: Avaliação da capacidade antioxidante
Abstract
Nowadays, macroalgae are becoming increasingly popular with consumers, due to a greater demand for innovative and healthy foods. Macroalgae are a marine resource with important properties such as high antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer and other properties. In this sense, the demand for essential oils has been growing in recent years, both in the food industry and in the cosmetics and medicinal fields. This study assessed the impact of the hydrodistillation method on two macroalgae commonly found on the Portuguese coast, Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis, and evaluated the respective extracted components such as essential oil, decoction water and hydrolate. These were evaluated according to their total phenolic content (TPC), as well as their antioxidant potential expressed by the absorption of the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP). The volatile compounds present in the essential oils of both algae were also analyzed. Regarding the total phenolic content, differences were observed between the two macroalgae (P< 0.05, Tukey test) about the decoction water extract, where Fucus vesiculosus obtained 1.57 ± 0.05 mg EAG and Gracilaria gracilis 1.31 ± 0.04 mg EAG per gram of extract. The antioxidant capacity expressed by the DPPH method showed similar values in both macroalgae (P > 0.05, Tukey test) in the essential oil extract. On the other hand, the decoction water extract and the hydrolate from the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus revealed a superior and significantly different antioxidant capacity (P < 0.05, Tukey test) when compared to the values obtained from Gracilaria gracilis, 82.14%, 53.74% and 60.04 %, 50.61%, respectively. Concerning the antioxidant capacity expressed by the FRAP method, the essential oil was the component that stood out significantly, with Fucus vesiculosus recording an average value of 15.43 µM FeSO4/g and Gracilaria gracilis 32.19 µM FeSO4/g. By analysis of the volatile compounds present in the essential oils of both macroalgae, the presence of a greater proportion of palmitic acid in Gracilaria gracilis (84.4%) and myristic acid in the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus (82.4%) was notable. Overall, it was possible to show the presence of antioxidant ability and natural fatty acids after hydrodistillation of the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis, with the prospect of their efficient use in various industries in the future to help the consumer.
