During the autumn of 1969, a serpulid worm, Hydroides norvegica (GUNNERUS), outbroke in oyster beds located along the coastal areas of Hiroshima Bay and the vicinities (Text-fig. 2). More than 6, 000 rafts of the oyster (Crassostrea gigas (THUNBERG)) cultured in these areas were totally damaged by bitter competition with the serpulid worms for food as well as for space (Plate 9).
