Title
Estado actual y perspectivas del cultivo de ostras perleras del género Pteria
Abstract
Pearl oysters are very attractive to humans because of their shells, the pearls they produce, and for food. However, information on the species of the genus Pteria is scattered and little known. Therefore, the objective of this study is to highlight the importance of this genus by providing information on the number of existing species, their geographical distribution, general characteristics, types of exploitation (fishing and aquaculture), and prospects for use. There are 30 recognized species of the genus Pteria, but information is available for only 28 of them. They are distributed in almost all the seas of the world (except Europe) and the greatest diversity is in Australia with 14 species. Most are small and their populations have declined due to overfishing. Some species are extracted and others are produced by aquaculture. Only Pt. sterna and Pt. penguin are produced commercially to obtain round nucleated pearls and mabes (hemispherical nucleated pearls). More pearl farms with these species are currently being created in some countries in Latin America (Peru and Ecuador) and in the South Pacific (Kingdom of Tonga, French Polynesia and Fiji Islands), particularly for the cultivation of mabes. A different perspective is to cultivate species of the genus Pteria with the inclusion of marginalized social groups and dual purpose, using its meat as food and the shells as an input for crafts or cosmetics.
