Title
Caracterización de la ictiofauna costera en Punta Colonet, Baja California
Abstract
The Baja California coast is home to a variety of complex habitats that promote taxonomic diversity, thereby influencing species abundance and diversity. Among these ecosystems, kelp forests and tidal pools stand out as they provide food and shelter for various taxonomic groups, with fish being one of the most representative. The objective of this study was to characterize the fish assemblages associated with the coast, including kelp forests, in Punta Colonet during two climatic seasons using seven sampling methodologies, establishing a baseline for the knowledge of fish fauna. To proceed with the quantification of the species richness and abundance, we put in practice seven different sampling methodologies: videotransects, roving surveys, clove oil (for cryptic fauna and in tide pools), gillnet, chinchorro and fishers landing. We count down a full list of 43 species divided in 23 families and 36 genera. During the heat season the families with more presence were Embiotocidae (7 species), Scorpaenidae (4 species), and Scianidae (3 species), with the gillnet being the methodology that presented the highest richness with 15 species. In other hand during the cols season the families with more presence were Embiotocide (7 species) Scorpaenidae (5 species) and Cottidae (3 species), the roving surveys, in this scenario showed the most richness with 11 species collected. The PERMANOVA results didn’t showed significant differences between both seasons in richness (pseudo-F= 0.8892; p=0.530), abundance (pseudo-F= 0.9834; p=0.467) and density (pseudo-F=0.9789; p=0.479), however, between the methodologies there were differences between richness (pseudo-F=4.4233; p= 0.001), abundance (pseudo-F= 4.0586; p=0.001) and density (pseudo-F= 4.0848; p=0.001). The diversity indices suggested the fish assemblage in Punta Colonet experiences low turnover between sampling periods, while coverage and asymptotic analysis indicated that the current species is considered of good quality, as it had a coverage on a 98.2%. This study establishes a solid baseline of the fish assemblage in Punta Colonet, highlighting that the use of complementary methodologies enhanced the completeness of the species inventory.
