Title
Review of the Species of the Genus Tobrilus (Nematoda, Triplonchida)
Abstract
Species of the genus Tobrilus, like all members of the family Tobrilidae, live in fresh water bodies and watercourses, being part of the meiobenthos and periphyton community (Gerlach and Riemann, 1974; Tsalolikhin, 1983; Gagarin, 1993; Zullini, 2005). The generic name Tobrilus was introduced by Hungarian nematologist Andrássy (Andrássy, 1959) to replace the original name Trilobus Bastian, 1865, which was a homonym of Trilobus from the group Trilobita. The morphological heterogeneity of the genus required its revision with the identification of a number of new genera (Tsalolikhin, 1981): Eutobrilus, Neotobrilus, Brevitobrilus, etc. The nominal genus Tobrilus retained 11 species with the type species T. gracilis (Bastian, 1865). Subsequently, a significant number of species of this genus new to science were described and the number of valid species increased to 29 (Tsalolikhin, 2005; Zullini, 2005; Andrássy, 2007; Tsalolikhin, 2009, 2015; Nemys eds., 2023). Since the species are morphologically very similar and difficult to distin?guish, the purpose of the work is to provide an over?view of the genus and offer a clue for identifying its species.
