Nuevos registros de appendicularia (Urochordata) y otras especies de zooplancton en el Pacífico tropical mexicano

Abstract

This study reports new records of zooplankton in the tropical Mexican Pacific, with a particular emphasis on appendicularians. Samples were collected from various locations between January 2023 and June 2024 us?ing plankton nets with openings of 20, 54, and 100 µm, as well as envi?ronmental DNA techniques and molecular phylogeny for precise species identification. A total of 12 new records were determined for the Mexican Pacific, with three specific records for certain areas, including species from the genera Pseudevadne, Penilia, Appendicularia, Fritillaria, and Oikopleura. Among the findings, the first molecular confirmation of Oikopleura dioica in Mexico stands out, revealing high genetic similarity with populations in Japan, highlighting the shared distribution between the northeastern and northwestern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, the new record of two subspecies of the genus Fritillaria for Mexico and the discovery of preferences between oceanic and coastal waters for the genera Oikopleura and Fritillaria are notable. This study not only expands the knowledge on the diversity and distribution of these organisms in the tropical Mexican Pacific but also provides a solid foundation for future research in the ecol?ogy and biogeography of appendicularians and other zooplankton groups. It also emphasizes the possible limitations in our understanding of these groups. The results underscore the need for more exhaustive and specific sampling at different spatial and temporal scales to better understand this region’s marine biodiversity. Furthermore, the continuous use of molec?ular techniques is recommended to improve accuracy in identifying and understanding zooplankton population dynamics.
