The presence of the species in the Belgian territory (Sluice Dock of Ostend) was only confirmed in 1998-1999, although this may not correspond with the year of its first introduction. In France, the Netherlands and Belgium, the European flat oyster <i>Ostrea edulis</i> almost disappeared as a result of this parasite. Infection with this blood cell parasite causes inflammation in flat oysters, often resulting in death after two to three years. Both the Japanese oyster <i>Crassostrea/Magallana gigas</i> and the common mussel <i>Mytilus edulis</i> appear to be resistant.","AbstractOtherLang":"De Oesterparasiet <i>Bonamia ostreae</i> is van oorsprong afkomstig uit Californië en werd van daaruit via oestertransport geëxporteerd naar Europa (in 1979). De aanwezigheid van de soort op het Belgisch grondgebied (Oostendse Spuikom)werd pas in 1998-1999 bevestigd, al stemt dit alllicht niet overeen met het jaar van de eerste introductie. In Frankrijk, Nederland en België verdween de inheemse Platte oester <i>Ostrea edulis</i> nagenoeg volledig ten gevolge van deze parasiet. Infectie met deze bloedcelparasiet veroorzaakt bij Platte oesters ontstekingen, die na twee à drie jaar vaak de dood tot gevolg hebben.
