The species originates from the Mediterranean Sea and unintentionally arrived in our regions along with the transport of mussels. The species was first observed in Belgium in 1950 in mussels transported from the Netherlands to the Sluice Dock of Ostend. Not much later, the parasite was found along the entire Belgian east coast. It is unclear whether the species is still present in Belgium, although it is suspected that the absence of reports is more likely due to a lack of attention.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het Rood darmroeipootkreeftje <i>Mytilicola intestinalis</i> is een parasitair roeipootkreeftje dat zich in het spijsverteringsstelsel van mosselen nestelt. De soort kwam oorspronkelijk voor in de Middellandse Zee en is ongewild in onze streken terechtgekomen samen met het transport van mosselen. De soort werd voor het eerst in België waargenomen in 1950 in mosselen die vanuit Nederland naar de Oostendse Spuikom getransporteerd waren. Niet veel later was de parasiet langs de hele Belgische Oostkust te vinden.
