This species is native to the Atlantic coasts of North and South America but was accidentally introduced to the Black Sea in the 1980s via the ballast water of cargo ships. Its introduction caused a collapse of the ecosystem. For some years, the warty comb jelly has been present in the North Sea. In 2007, it was observed for the first time in Belgium. It remains unclear what the ecological consequences are in our region of the introduction of this alien species.","AbstractOtherLang":"De Amerikaanse ribkwal <i>Mnemiopsis leidyi</i> is een beruchte predator van dierlijk plankton en viseieren. Deze soort kwam oorspronkelijk enkel voor langs de Atlantische kusten van Noord- en Zuid-Amerika, maar werd in de jaren ‘80 via het ballastwater van vrachtschepen ongewild geïntroduceerd in de Zwarte Zee. De introductie leidde tot de ineenstorting van het ecosysteem. Sinds enkele jaren komt de Amerikaanse ribkwal nu ook voor in de Noordzee en werd ze voor de eerste maal in België waargenomen in 2007.
