It is a bastard or hybrid of the European native Small cordgrass <i>Spartina maritima</i> and the North American Smooth cordgrass <i>Spartina alterniflora</i>. At the time, Common cordgrass was planted for land reclamation and stabilisation of the sediment. It was first observed in Belgium in 1936. However, the species appeared very invasive and created a shift in mudflat vegetations. The result was a reduction in the natural value of this rare coastal habitat.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het Engels slijkgras <i>Spartina anglica</i> kent zijn oorsprong in Zuid-Engeland. De soort is ontstaan uit een bastaard of hybride van het in Europa inheemse Klein slijkgras <i>Spartina maritima</i> en de Noord-Amerikaanse slijkgrassoort <i>Spartina alterniflora</i>. Het Engels slijkgras werd destijds massaal aangeplant om aan landwinning en sedimentbinding te doen en werd in België voor het eerst waargenomen vanaf 1936. De soort bleek echter heel invasief en zorgde voor een sterke wijziging in slikke- en schorrevegetaties.
