Hiermee kan bijvoorbeeld de respons van een systeem op variabele rivierafvoer worden onderzocht. De tijdsintegrator berekent het tijdsgedrag van de hoeveelheid sediment, zowel in suspensie als op de bodem. Hierbij wordt de opwerveling beschreven door gebruik te maken van een dynamische erodeerbaarheidsfunctie.<br>&nbsp;De ruimtelijke discretisatie geschiedt aan de hand van tweede-orde upwind en downwind (backward) schematisaties. Voor de tijdsintegratie kunnen een forward Euler schema (expliciet) of een Crank-Nicholson (CN) dan wel backward Euler (BE) Schema (beiden impliciet) worden gebruikt. In de praktijk zijn tot dusverre enkel CN en BE gebruikt aangezien deze impliciete schema’s betere stabiliteitseigenschappen hebben.<br>De performatie van CN en BE wordt onderzocht in functie van tijdstap en fijnmazigheid van het rekengrid. Hiervoor wordt in eerste instantie het geïdealiseerde Scheldemodel met constante rivierafvoer beschouwd. Zoals verwacht vertoont het CN-schema tweede orde convergentie bij afnemende tijdstap. Omdat CN echter niet L-stabiel is treden bij grotere tijdstappen temporele oscillaties op die slechts langzaam uitdempen. Het BE-schema geeft een eerste orde nauwkeurigheid bij afnemende tijdstap, maar geeft ook bij grotere tijdstappen nog goede resultaten omdat het schema L-stabiel is. Zowel CN als BE laten bij benadering een kwadratische convergentie zien bij afnemende ruimtestap.<br>Tot slot worden CN en BE ook kort vergeleken voor het Scheldemodel met variabele rivierafvoer, gebaseerd op dagwaarden te Melle voor het jaar 2009.
