Title
Tetragramma salasi sp. nov. (Echinoidea) de l’Aptià inferior de la conca del Maestrat
Abstract
Since the 2014-2018 period, research on the systematics of the class Echinoidea in the Maestrat sedimentary basin (CM) has become a significant focus of interest in global echinology studies. In recent years, several investiga-tions have advanced our understanding of the echinoids in the CM and refined their systematics. However, much work remains to be done. This article is just a modest contribution towards achieving that goal. This paper is of interest as it expands our knowledge of the genus Tetragramma Agassiz, 1838 in the CM, which until now has received little attention from paleontologists, aside from the work of Lambert (1935). Lambert described a new species T. giganteum, based on material sent to him by the Castelló geologist Royo i Gómez, who collected it from the same site at Cap de Vinyet where the specimen studied in this article was found. Interes-tingly, the renowned French echinologist never visited the Maestrat basin himself. The study is of significance because it opens the door for further research on this genus, which is likely to hold several unresolved questions.A new species Tetragramma salasi has been described. This work enhances our understanding of the fossil echinoid fauna from the Lower Cretaceous of the CM and underscores the significance of the paleontological record of the class Echinoidea in this basin, situated to the west of the Thethys sea, for this period.
