- Abstract
- This is not the first time freshwater and marine shells have been found linked to paleolithic occupancy in Berici Hills sites; as a matter of fact, 5 fragments belonging to the Dentaliidae family and a perforated specimen of Theodoxus danubialis were found in the Upper Paleolithic strata of Riparo del Broion (VI) archaeological site (Romandini et al. 2012; Peresani et al. 2019a; Arrighi et al. 2020). In 2017, the University of Ferrara in collaboration with the University of Bologna started a new systematic study campaign in which several valve fragments of freshwater family Unionidae were found in Middle Paleolithic layers. Furthermore, through a carefully review of uluzzian malacological remains, it has been possible to identify a new marine gastropod related to the Euspira catena species for these layers, with likely anthropic modification. The taphonomic study, outlined in this presentation, allowed us to examine and open up new lines of inquiry based on use of these two different types of shells discovered in Riparo del Borion (VI).
