- Title
- Amazonian crustaceans: Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda, Palaemonidae)
- Abstract
- We discuss the distribution and reproduction, functional morphology, osmoregulatory capability, digestive enzyme expression, and metal ecotoxicology of Macrobrachium amazonicum, a palaemonid shrimp from tropical and subtropical, fresh or brackish waters in South America. Morphophysiological findings on the development of the larval digestive system and of digestive enzyme machinery as reflected in the functional genome are discussed. Mechanisms of isosmotic intracellular and anisosmotic extracellular regulation and osmoregulatory modulation through ion transporter gene expression are outlined. Kinetic characteristics of the gill (Na+, K+)- and V(H+)-ATPases, including the effects of phosphorylation by protein kinases on enzyme activity in different salinities, are considered. Given the effects of climate change on Amazonian biological diversity, we also consider threats to M. amazonicum and their consequences in future ecological and economic scenarios.
