We start by giving a brief account of the derivation of the most general version of the shallow water&nbsp; system of equations for a boat with non‐constant beam and draught profiles. We will also consider the boat to be able to trim&nbsp; and sinkage by hydrostatic effects. Then, we present a quick review of the two classical families of theories of the literature&nbsp; on the matter: the energy and momentum approaches. We will comment their consistencies or inconsistencies with regards&nbsp; to the aforementioned general model.
