De studie is uitgevoerd met een bestaand sterk geschematiseerd Delft3D &nbsp;model van het estuarium. Er is een methodiek toegepast waarbij het morfologisch model in een &nbsp;berekening van 500 jaar zelf een bodemligging vormt op basis van de meest relevante fysische processen, de geometrie van het estuarium, vereenvoudigde hydrodynamische randvoorwaarden en parametrisatie voor sedimenttransport. Buiten een lokale roosterverfijning in de oostelijke helft van de Westerschelde en de implementatie van een vaste bodemligging ter hoogte van Saeftinghe is de modelschematisering quasi-hetzelfde als in eerdere studies. Het toegepaste model is in staat om een herkenbaar patroon van geulen en platen in de Westerschelde te produceren. In het gesimuleerde geulensysteem zijn zowel drempels als diepe putten aanwezig, waardoor het mogelijk is om de morfologische effecten van storten in diepe putten te onderzoeken.<br>Er is een scenario-analyse uitgevoerd om de morfologische impact van vaargeulonderhoud en van &nbsp;verschillende stortstrategieën op lange termijn te onderzoeken. In deze scenarioberekeningen zijn &nbsp;vervolgruns opgestart waarin een bepaalde stortstrategie continu wordt toegepast, startend vanaf de &nbsp;door het model zelf geproduceerde bodemligging na 500 jaar, en met een aanvullende simulatieduur &nbsp;van 100 jaar. De modelresultaten tonen aan dat het vastleggen van de vaargeul een verstarring van de &nbsp;morfologie veroorzaakt, waarbij de natuurlijke dynamiek van geulen en platen beperkt wordt. &nbsp;De gemodelleerde stortscenario’s laten zien dat het langdurig storten in diepe delen van de vaargeul &nbsp;uiteindelijk kan leiden tot een verondieping van de hoofdgeul en een uitdieping van de nevengeulen. De morfologische veranderingen die door de stortstrategieën worden geïnduceerd hebben ook een &nbsp;impact op de getijvoortplanting en het residueel transport. Tenslotte is de impact van de stortstrategie op het baggerbezwaar in de modelsimulaties geanalyseerd.
