It is biostratigraphically useful because its evolution tracks through a series of morphospecies that have different biochronological ranges, and for much of its history it has exhibited rapid reversals of its preferred direction of coiling. Six morphospecies are recognized: <i>P. finalis</i>, <i>P. obliquiloculata</i>, <i>P. praecursor</i>, <i>P. praespectabilis</i>, <i>P. primalis</i>, and <i>P. spectabilis</i>. Each of these is illustrated, described, and distinguished using Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEMs) of the type material and new light microscope and SEM images. Detailed synonymy lists are presented.
