Many of these fish were large with small ovaries that visually appeared immature or spent. Histology revealed that nearly one third of the females sampled had ovaries that were actively resorbing all oocytes that had started to ripen. The mass resorption of oocytes would have caused spawning omission by these fish in 1999.
