De traditionele bouwtechnieken met steenachtige materialen zijn echter tijdrovend, kostbaar en inflexibel, wat de creatieve mogelijkheden beperkt en leidt tot aanzienlijke afvalstromen. In een eerder onderzoek werd de innovatieve CIRCUS-techniek ontwikkeld, waarbij schaalmodellen worden gefreesd uit een smeltbaar materiaal met een lage smelttemperatuur (&lt;80 °C). Dit biedt voordelen zoals hoge nauwkeurigheid, automatisering, herbruikbaarheid van het materiaal en flexibiliteit in aanpassingen. Dit project richtte zich op de verdere ontwikkeling en opschaling van de CIRCUS-techniek. Parafine wax (Basewax0597 van Paramelt) werd als meest geschikt materiaal geïdentificeerd. Een belangrijke uitdaging was het minimaliseren van kleefproblemen tijdens het frezen, wat werd opgelost met een platte frees. Hoewel significante vooruitgang is geboekt in de opschaling van het proces, is de CIRCUS-techniek nog niet volledig matuur.
