Estradiol-17 beta (E sub(2)) has been identified as a mediator of gonadal feminisation in fish. In order to study the mechanism of E sub(2) action in seabream sex reversal, cDNAs encoding two different forms of seabream estrogen receptor (sbER) have been cloned. On the basis of sequence similarity one form of ER is homologous to the classical ER alpha while the other is more related to the newly discovered ER beta . Tissue expression of each sbER revealed some important differences, with ER alpha being detected mainly in testis and ER beta co-expressed in testis and ovary. In an experiment to study the expression of the two receptors, sex reversal was induced by E sub(2).
