This species is morphologically similar to Caprella acantogaster Mayer, 1890, Caprella eximia Mayer, 1890, and Caprella mutica Schurin, 1935 as all four species share dorsal projections on pereonites and possess robust (grasping) setae on pereopods 5-7. However, C. carinata can be distinguished from relative species by the curved projections on pereonites 1 and 2, as well as by the distinct shape of the poison tooth on gnathopod 2.
