This high species diversity is reflected in the wide taxonomic and morphological diversities that characterize marine fishes, which evolved to allow them to live in all ocean areas, from coastal and transition zones such as estuaries or coastal lagoons to the great abyssal depths. Life-history patterns encompass extreme situations of short life-cycles and high fecundity as well as their contrasting great longevity, late sexual maturation, and low fecundity.
