However, most of the research to date focuses primarily on single species responses rather than trying to examine the effects of noise on multiple species in a system or the species community as a whole. One reason this may often be unaddressed is that system-wide studies are difficult to do. However, by choosing a focal species that serves a particular role in their ecosystem (e.g., as predator or prey), and focusing on how noise affects that role, scientists can better understand the indirect effect of noise through a community.
