This chapter examines the interdependence and interconnection between geographic information sciences and planning. It shows how the use of geographic information and related technologies shapes governance. The chapter seeks to explain how these elements influence planning practices. To contribute to theoretical debates on planning, it provides an overview of the issues related to the role of geographic information and how it influences planning decisions. The chapter examines the relationship between information and participation, considering the use of geographic information by and for society, particularly through participatory mapping. It discusses the opportunities and challenges of planning under the growing influence of the digital turn, including a critical examination of the democratic illusion it may generate.
