Previously, the species was known mostly from the eastern Mediterranean. To aid in its identification, a new description is provided, expanding on those published by other authors for this species and taxa currently considered as its synonyms. The results of this study also suggest that <i>P. obsoletus libanicus</i> Vandel (<a href=\"https://bioone.org/journals/entomological-news/volume-133/issue-2/021.133.0206/Porcellio-obsoletus-Budde-Lund-1885-an-Eastern-Mediterranean-Terrestrial-Isopod/10.3157/021.133.0206.full#bibr29\">1955</a>) is likely a distinct species, whereas <i>P. obsoletus mavromoustakisi</i> Strouhal (<a href=\"https://bioone.org/journals/entomological-news/volume-133/issue-2/021.133.0206/Porcellio-obsoletus-Budde-Lund-1885-an-Eastern-Mediterranean-Terrestrial-Isopod/10.3157/021.133.0206.full#bibr26\">1968</a>) does not exhibit significant differences from the species originally described by Budde-Lund in 1885.
