This study applies quantitative fault analysis techniques typically utilized in the oil and gas industry to ultra-high resolution seismic reflection data from the Ays & eacute;n Fjord in Chile to investigate active faulting. By combining these fault analysis techniques with sedimentological observations of a long marine core with a new time depth relationship derived for the study area, we are able to quantitatively constrain the ages of past surface ruptures of the R & iacute;o Pescado Fault at 103-104 yr timescales. This study presents a palaeoseismic record over similar to 13 kyr and constrains the gradual evolution and linkage of a young fault by the hybrid fault growth model. In particular, two palaeoearthquakes, each with maximum backstripped throws of similar to 2.80 and similar to 1.23 m are identified, which occurred at 1,791 +/- 65 cal yrs BP and similar to 8,000 +/- 60 cal yrs BP respectively. This research provides a proof of concept for the use of ultra-high resolution seismic reflection data combined with sediment cores as a tool to conduct quantitative well constrained palaeoseismological studies and highlights its importance in constraining the early structural evolution of faults by resolving individual segment growth and linkage over millennial timescales.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"The Early Evolution of a Young Normal Fault in the Aysén Fjord, Chile","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-10-31 01:36:16.322237","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"AuthorKeywords":"young normal fault;seismic reflection data;hybrid fault growth;active faulting;palaeoseismology;Ays & eacute;n Fjord;aysen fjord;growth faults;segment linkage;seismic data;displacement;earthquake;zone;length;propagation;insights","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2025,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2026-09-28","DateCreate":"2026-09-28","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:001523656800001","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1029/2025TC008835"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":449186,"PubliDate":2025,"Pagination":"e2025TC008835","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"44","Issue":"7","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":209275,"SerRR":"Tectonics.
