BTs were detected in a wide range of environmental media and biota from Asian coastal waters, indicating a widespread contamination by these compounds even in developing countries. Several studies have also made clear the existence of significant OC contamination in the coastal waters and open seas of tropical Asian countries in recent years. It has been also pointed out that OCs used in the tropical regions disperse on a global scale by long-range atmospheric transport and deposit in colder regions. This feature of contamination has led to high accumulation and toxic effects in marine mammals.
