The biological activity of soluble material extracted from the sediment was measured using the growth yield of two diatoms from the genus <i>Amphora</i> as an indicator of the presence of assimilable organic carbon. Although, on occasion the extracts promoted the heterotrophic growth of <i>Amphora coffeaeformis</i> var. <i>perpusilla</i>, more often they caused growth inhibition.
