Chemical substances or kairomones, associated with the predators, suffice to cause changes in morphology, life history or behavior. The extent of these adaptations is variable and genotype specific. Trade-offs and a variable environment are important to understand why induced behavior is common. An example of diel vertical migration (DVM) and the underlying photobehavior is discussed. In the given example, DVM occurs during a short period of heavy predation by juvenile fish. Costs are high and explain why it is conditionally induced. The <i>Daphnia</i> population complex consists of many clones of which dominance changes rapidly. Infochemicals, like kairomones, are important factors that determine food web relations and community composition.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AMS","StandardTitle":"The role of infochemicals in lake plankton crustacean behavior and predator-prey relations","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2025-07-08 01:30:36.517900","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":1999,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2000-12-19","DateCreate":"2000-12-19","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":0,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":5043,"PubliDate":1999,"Pagination":"161-175","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":"90-5410-478-3","Volume":"12","Issue":null,"BRefMon":5042,"BRefMonRR":"<b>von Vaupel Klein, J.
