This is similar to the classical energy method for stability analysis; a modern extension of this method (by Serrin, 1959) is described, and the implications of the method carefully evaluated. It is concluded that the method describes dynamically possible motions; the work of Petrov {1938), in which the contrary conclusion is reached, is examined.
