The main features of turbulent motion in the sea are discussed, including the lack of isotropy between horizontal and vertical components and the dependence of the latter on stability. Another important feature is that the input of energy takes place at several widely different scales and this affects the form of the energy spectrum and the dependence of the diffusive processes on scale. The basic equation for the turbulent mixing of a substance in the sea involves the covariances between turbulent velocity components and fluctuations of concentration.
