The number of subsamples needed to obtain valid results depends, among other things, on the question to be answered, on the desired reliability of the answer, and on the spatial dispersion of the individuals. This paper presents three methods of determining sample size under different assumptions and requirements. Species-area awes give expected numbers of species per sample size. Similarity-area curves show mean similarities between pairs of samples of the same size. A probability-based model gives the minimum number of species found with a predefined probability.
