This is an important reason why the dune landscape has been protected from urban development and mass tourism. On the other hand water catchment caused ecological impoverishment. Desiccation was followed by the disappearance of many bird and plant species of marsh biotopes. In recent time many dune areas are infiltrated artificially. With polluted and eutrophic surface water from elsewhere. This infiltration fosters the occurrence of nitrtrophious tall herbs rn phreatophytic vegetations. The rich and diverse indigenous vegetations of wet dune slacks have almost completely disappeared from the infiltrated dune areas.
