It occurs along most of the south coast and extends northwards on the west coast as far as County Donegal. However, on shores where salinity is appreciably reduced, galloprovincialis is noticeably less abundant. Both <i>M. edulis</i> and <i>M. galloprovincialis</i> exhibit considerable morphological variation according to their age and to the wide range of local conditions in which they occur.
