Though adults from both populations would be morphologically identical, the study of the ontogenic cycle shows noticeable differences between them. These differences concern reproductive behaviour, morphology of sexual products and larval morphology. On the Mediterranean coast of France, where no important tidal range occurs, <i>S. fuliginosa</i> lives in polluted areas, under waters of which the O<sub>2</sub> content is depleted. These conditions were regarded as responsible for the biological modifications described. Nevertheless, comparison between observations on animals of both populations, and literature data about the whole fam of Spionidae, suggest that the observed differences are very important; so it appears likely that both the populations belong to 2 distinct spp, but the morphological similarity between adults does not allow for any discrimination.
