In first instance, a checklist of fish and crustaceans recorded in the lower Zeeschelde has become available. The present checklist of fish contains 31 species. The fish community is composed of 13 marine species, 3 catadromous species, 8 estuarine residents, 1 anadromous species and 6 freshwater species. Six crustacean species were recorded. The obtained checklist of fish is compared with historical and recent data. The comparison shows a remarkable decrease in the total number of fish during the last century. The distribution of diadromous fishes, estuarine residents and freshwater fishes is probably greatly affected by low oxygen levels in the lower Zeeschelde, whereas the disappearance of adventitious marine species is probably due to overfishing in the North Sea. Secondly, densities for each month and for each recorded species were subjected to two classification techniques and one ordination technique in order to study the temporal structure of the community of fish and larger crustaceans. The results show clear seasonal patterns in the distribution of fish. Different species reach their maximal density at different times. High numbers of fish were recorded between September and February. Clupeids and gobies seem to dominate the community. In spring and early summer fish were absent or extremely rare probably due to low oxygen levels. The community of crustaceans is dominated by shrimps. Also for these species, results show clear temporal patterns. Temporal patterns both of fish and crustaceans were discussed.","AbstractOtherLang":"Vanaf september 1991 tot en met augustus 1992 en gedurende 1993 werd de visgemeenschap in de Beneden-Zeeschelde maandelijks bemonsterd aan de hand van staalnames uit het koelwater dat door de kerncentrale van Doel wordt gecapteerd. In eerste instantie werd een soortenlijst bekomen van de vissen en kreeftachtigen van de Beneden-Zeeschelde. Het huidige visbestand omvat 31 soorten, waarvan 13 mariene vissen, 3 katadrome soorten, 8 estuariene soorten, 1 anadrome soort en 6 zoetwatersoorten. De Crustaceafauna bestaat uit 2 garna1ensoorten en 4 krabbensoorten. De soortenlijst van vissen werd vergeleken met historische en recente data en daaruit blijkt dat het aantal soorten tijdens de 20ste eeuw aanzienlijk is afgenomen. Vooral de diadrome soorten, de estuariene residenten en de zoetwatersoorten worden getroffen door de lage zuurstofconcentraties in de Zeeschelde. Het wegblijven van echte mariene soorten gaat waarschijnlijk gepaard met overbevissing op de Noordzee. In tweede instantie werden de datamatrices statistisch verwerkt met twee klustermethodes en een ordinatiemethode. Deze analyses laten het toe om de temporele structuur van de levensgemeenschap van vissen en kreeftachtigen te onderzoeken. Er werden duidelijke seizoenale patronen gevonden in het voorkomen van alle vissoorten. De verschillende soorten bereiken piekdensiteiten op verschillende tijdsstippen van hetjaar. De grootste aantallen vis werden geregistreerd van september tot februari. Vooral haringachtigen en grondels zijn in deze periode zeer abundant. In de lente en de vroege zomer worden vrijwel geen vissen ingezogen. Mogelijk zijn de vispopulaties gedurende deze periode afwezig als gevolg van te lage zuurstofconcentraties in de Beneden-Zeeschelde. De levensgemeenschap van kreeftachtigen wordt gedomineerd door garnalen.
