In 1999 a comprehensive list of European decapods was published by d‘Udekem d’Acoz and it was decided to make the present list as much compatible with that source as possible, because subsequent researchers will definitively base themselves on the published list containing also distribution and literature records. The present list thus also follows the classification used by d'Udekem d’Acoz (1999) on the family and generic level, however with some exceptions:

The generic system of Pérez-Farfante & Kensley (1997) has been used for the Penaeoid shrimps rather than the one in d’Udeken d’Acoz (1999)
The hippolytid genera Eualus and Thoralus are still separated, because if the mandible palpus character is removed as a primary one, the whole shrimp classification gets disputable. I do not think that such a discussion is possible at the present level of knowledge.
In stenopodoid shrimps two families instead of one (viz. Spongicolidae and Stenopodidae) have been recognised instead of one, which is in accordance with Holthuis (1993).
For the Callianassidae the classification of Sakai (1999b) has been used.
The system proposed by d’Udekem d’Acoz (1999) for the polybiine genera of Portunidae has not been used, as I cannot see any progress in lumping all the genera together. Before such major changes are implemented a thorough revision must take place and the arguments be fully exposed and discussed. For the time being a certain “conservatism“ seems to be more prudent.
On the species level all species known only from the Suez-Canal have been excluded in order to stick to a merely European framework. Also all species with doubtful identity have been excluded, as well as such that have been recorded only once a long time ago close to harbours and never have been found again. The following table gives a list of such species, also ones known from other sources, with the reason for their exclusion.
Metapenaeopsis vaillanti (Nobili, 1904) - Only Suez Canal;Penaeus chinensis (Osbeck, 1765) - Potential aquaculture species;Penaeus monodon Fabricius, 1798 - Potential aquaculture species;Pasiphaea princeps Smith, 1884 - Questionable records at abt. 25°N;Plesionika holthuisi Crosnier & Forest, 1968 - Probably a misidentification;Hippolyte orientalis Heller, 1862 - Only Suez-Canal;Gasconella parvula De Saint Laurent, 1985 - Nomen nudum, invalid name;Palaemon pacificus (Stimpson, 1860) - Only Suez Canal;Jasus lalandii (H. F. W. Herbst kept at the Berlin Museum and in consequence some names of well known European crabs had to be changed: Pisa corallina is now P. hirticornis, Liocarcinus arcuatus is now L. navigator, and Xantho incisus is now X. hydrophilus.

References
Most of the references cited in this introduction can be found in d’Udekem d’Acoz (1999), the newer ones are cited here separately

Galil, B.
