The original database includes synonyms as well as subsequent usage of the names in the literature and the geographical distribution of species. The ERMS list represents the state-of-the-art of Ascidiacean systematics and nomenclature, and this may occasionally deviate from common usage; in cases where a commonly accepted name is no longer valid, it appears in the ERMS list as a synonym.  The author thanks David Connor for comparing an earlier draft of the European list with the British List and for pointing out a number of inconsistencies and omissions.  P.
