Cannibalism is lower in sand-bottomed tanks during the first experimental month but at the end of the experiment, the mean rates of mortality were 40 and 66%, depending upon the number of shrimps per tank, and not really upon the presence or absence of sand. On the other hand, <i>Crangon</i> grows much better in the sand-bottomed tanks than in the others. The rate of length increment is 136 and 153% (-S), 187 and 193% (+S) The daily wt gain, for the 4-month period, is equal to 5.25 mg and 5.8 mg with sand compared to 2.7 mg and 3.5 mg without sand. Besides reproduction, <i>Crangon</i> seems adversely affected when its natural substratum is lacking. The importance of a sand-bottom in long term rearing experiments with <i>Crangon</i> is discussed.
