The nematode populations were close to the sediment surface throughout the year, with the majority of the total population in the upper one-centimetre layer of the sediment. Seasonal fluctuations in the vertical distribution is related to variation in the depth of the anaerobic layer beneath the sand surface. Horizontal distribution of the nematode fauna is determined by the ability of the nematodes to withstand fluctuating environmental conditions, on their affinity for sediments with a high silt and detritus content and the nature of the available food material.
