In this issue, several studies on the carbon cycle, the primary and secondary production, and more specifically the seasonal variations of these processes, are presented. A new Arctic Research Programme, the Arctic Light and Heat Programme, is described. The main objectives and tasks of the programme are research on the seasonal C-flux variability and some significant processes and components along a south-north gradient in the Western Barents Sea. The focus lays in particular on the marginal ice zone and the ice-covered northernmost regions.
