Stained cells lie at the origin of the diffuse fibres of a distal sensory ramification of the parietal nerves which extends on either side of the aperture and follows the distal partition to reach the basal wall. The cellular body lying beneath the parietal epithelium is prolonged by a distal process with a swollen ending which is inserted between epithelial cells. Ultrastructural study shows that this swollen ending adheres to the cuticular or skeletal layers of the wall by a microvillous border. It encloses a central body without a limiting membrane, made of thin granulations and microfilaments which are organized into fibrillar strands beneath the microvillous border. Microvilli enclose an axis of microfilaments in the prolongation of the underlying fibrillar strands. These cells are interpreted as sensory nerve cells from their selective affinity for the nerve strain and their continuity with nerve fibres. They seem to be rather mechanoreceptors than chemoreceptors, according to their internal location at the basal edge of partitions and to the differentiation of their cytoskeleton.
