At higher levels of the shore physical parameters and the mineralogical nature of sediments control the spatial distribution of populations. At intermediate levels where the action of external factors is less pronounced, and where a greater stability occurs, the chemical characteristics of interstitial water are less favourable to the establishment of an abundant <i>S. benedicti</i> population. At lower levels the recruiting larvae are attracted by the chemical properties of the sediment, as shown by positive correlations with chlorophyll.
