Azoic sediments, from the etang de Berre, were placed in experimental boxes of about 5 dm super(3) fixed at 5 m depth in Lazaret's bay (Toulon). Two boxes were removed each month during one year; one for the chemical analyses and the other to follow the degree of colonization by macrofauna. Monthly grab samples were also taken in the area surrounding the experimental boxes to compare with the experimental populations.
