RIS is a concept for harmonised information services to support traffic and transport management in inland navigation, including interfaces to other transport modes. <br><br> 3. The generic elements ofRIS are : <br> - Fairway information service <br> - Traffic information service <br> - Traffic management <br> - Calamity abatement service <br> - Logistic services <br><br> 4. These services should be supported by currently available technical systems like : <br> - Mobile radio communication systems for inland navigation (VHF radio) <br> - Ship and shore based radar <br> - Mobile data communication systems <br> - Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) <br> - Internet <br> - Electronic chart and display and information system for inland navigation (Inland ECDIS) <br> - Automatic identification system for inland navigation (Inland AIS) <br> - Ship reporting systems. <br><br> 5. Harmonisation of services and systems will substantially improve the performance of inland navigation. <br><br> 6. Harmonised RIS elements will facilitate the implementation of multi-modal transports, because similar systems exist for sea, road and railway. <br><br> 7. Implementation of RIS will reduce the need for infrastructure works, like channel widening or building of new locks. <br><br> 8. Apart from navigation, RIS will support other activities at the waterways like flood warnings and environmental protection. <br><br> 9. In order to enable better understanding in the professional world, the terms, definitions and the RIS architecture depicted in the RIS Guidelines 2002 should be used. <br><br> 10.
