The distinguishing features of <i>Leptanthura</i> -related genera are pointed out. The information regarding the distribution, depth range and habitat of <i>Leptanthura</i> -species is summarized. The genus is predominantly distributed in the southern hemisphere, with most species known from the Indo-West Pacific. Most species live in deepwater often with a wide bathymetrical range. Only 16 are known from depths less than 100 m. The inhabited substrate is known for few species and seems to be rather diverse.
