The difficulties encountered in the adoption of this concept will be described. It seems that these migrations must be divided into several stages during which the corresponding behaviours can differ greatly. These behaviours are usually due to the presence or absence of conflicting relationships between environmental conditions and physiological states (expressions of the genetic programme) which can be modulated by certain environmental factors. These relationships are the cause of certain tropisms, but they are not always responsible for the migratory behaviour which follows.
