This inventory is based on recent systematics and suprabenthic studies. The number of species is higher in the western part of the Channel (Roscoff, Plymouth, Golfe normano-breton) than in two areas in the eastern part (Bay of Seine) and Wimereux: respectively, Roscoff (202 species), Plymouth and Golfe normano-breton (194), Bay of Seine (130) and Wimereux (136). The impoverishment of the amphipod fauna from the western part to the eastern part of the Channel is due to a hydroclimatic gradient.
