It is suggested that the family should be placed in the Cervinioidea grouping also the chiefly deep-sea Cerviniidae and the mesopelagic Aegisthidae. Because of numerous unique and unusual derived traits, the smallsized Rotundiclipeidae are regarded as the advanced sistergroup of the Cerviniidae-Aegisthidae complex whilst the Cerviniidae are standing closest to the cervinioid ancestor. In the context of Stock's (1986) conclusion it is postulated that both the cave-dwelling Rotundiclipeidae and the deep-sea Cerviniidae are originated from a common shallow water ancestor.
